Fasting - He talks about the power that fasting has for our body. It basically gives our body a rest from digesting and processing food, so that it can use the energy to detox. We only have so much energy to work with, so when we are always using the resources somewhere else, the body does not have the energy to detox, which we should be doing daily. This leads to a toxic overload. In his clean program, he suggests fasting for 12 hours every day between dinner and breakfast.

Liquid Meals - Dr. Junger has you eat two liquid meals, one in the morning, and the other for dinner. The reason for this is that it is very easy to digest and assimilate, so it makes it easier for your body to continue detoxing. it also lengthens the time over night when your body is not dealing with assimilating food.

Elimination Diet Foods - There are certain food that many people tend to be sensitive to. These foods are avoided during the cleanse to reduce inflammation.  There is a double benefit of doing the cleanse: since you have avoided your triggers for 3 weeks, when you come off the cleanse, if you can introduce foods one at a time and discover which ones bother your system, and might be contributing to your pain.

Bowel Movements - As your body dumps the toxins, it is important to be eliminating them. He has suggestions for this problem. I would recommend using magnesium, because it will serve the dual purpose of replenishing your magnesium, as well as making sure your bowels move.

Water - If you have read any of my other articles, you know how important I think water is. Check here for the symptoms of chronic dehydration, and how much water you should be drinking here. Just fixing your hydration can have an incredible effect on your pain levels.

Movement - This is important for mobilizing the garbage in your system and moving it out. Even just taking the stairs instead of the elevator will make a difference. Your lymphatic system is the garbage pickup service, but it doesn't move anything without your muscles. They are the pumps of this system. Rest - It is important to sleep enough. Again, this gives your body the energy to be able to get out of the detox debt. And make sure you breathe deeply all day.

This is the best body cleanse that I have found. And even if you can't make it to 21 days that he recommends with it, you still get benefits. In fact, Dr. Junger talks about doing a mini cleanse for one day a week, or after you really over load your system (like Thanksgiving!) I really like his tone in the book.
